Time for an update.
It's been 5,000 miles since my PG and clutch install.
Due to an overboost issue my engine had to come out anyway and I thought I'd crack open the tranny and take a look.
My main reason for going back in the tranny was my Floating speedometer
The cruise control didn't work because of it and I happen to like my cruise.
After 5k miles the tranny magnet had a suprising amount of metal shavings caked to it.
It actually felt soft to the touch there was so much.
I'm pretty confident this was metal from the PG itself and/or the spider gears.
Now if this were 50k miles I'd be fine, but after 5k it's a bit concerning.
I ultimately decided to just put my stock diff back in... primarly to get my cruise control back due to a damaged speedo ring (see other thread).
I just don't race the car and hardly take advantage of the turbo so I opted to go back to the stock diff vs. spending the money on a Torsen etc.
On a side note, the black RTV never leaked.
To conclude this thread and PG review, I have to say the actual performance of the unit is as advertised.
increase traction by causing both wheels to turn.
However, it does put undue stress on gears that were not designed for it, as stated by many other people already.
This will just serve as a documented case vs. word of mouth.
In conclusion, can I recommend the PG to anyone? Yes and No.
- you get it cheap and can install it yourself
- you don't put many miles on your car
- you have a low-power drag car and also put few miles on it
- it's your daily driver and you put a decent amount of miles on the car
- you paid retail for it, or anywhere close
- you can't install it yourself
- a forced-induction drag car
- an autocross-type car where the tranny takes a severe beating.
Exedy clutch after 5k miles
The Exedy clutch is wearing very well.
The pads are a very hard material and are wearing the opposing surfaces faster than the pads.
This is much like hard brake pads wear the rotors.
The pattern being slowly cut into the pressure plate slightly pitted and not smooth like a stock clutch disk would wear.. again like a brake pad wears a rotor.
I could see this clutch easily going 100k miles on a daily driven vehicle.
My 5k miles were mostly in-town driving.
The driver's side mount is still great and in like-new condition.
Not too much vibration in my opinion.
