Rubber O-rings are a good idea. The rack "kit" from Ford Europe (via BAT Inc.) includes six nylon washers: four (4) for the front and two (2) for the rear. The instructions include graphics about removing the rack. Specifically, plug the holes with the bolts provided, but use the nylon washers when the rack is off the car.
