I have a friend with a bone stock GTI MKV and he runs a lot for fun (unlike me, I can't afford to break my car yet) but the other night I figured one run wouldn't hurt me so I lined up against Dennis in his GTI and yes I lost! But I was impressed because it was a lot closer than I thought. He jumped out by about a car due to having torque [?|] then I closed to his rear fender at the top of 1st and stuck there for the whole race. My SVTF is lighty modded with just FC TB, AEM SRI, FRPP wires, AZFS22C plugs. I was impressed that I could stay that close. When I get my ORP and rear torque mount, we're running again. Anyone in a N/A SVTF kill a GTI MKV? I'd like to hear if you did (no street racing cuz I don't want this closed)

yes the mk5 is the new 2.0T version... and there are levels to the chips... I think your friend got a cheap one... I've seen them put over 300whp to the ground with the more expensive ones. They stop the ecu from restricting boost - the speed3 and speed6 are the same way... the ecu controls the boost to have a perfectly flat tq curve for somehting like 2500 -6000 rpms.

They get fast quick... but They are a little piggy tooo... lol..

MkV is the fifth generation of the chassis. GTI is a variant built on it.

I don't think out antiquated C170 chassis is king of much anymore. When it first came out, Volkswagon conceded Ford had beat them at their own game. But, 1998 was a long time ago.

Bear in mind that the C170 chassis was developed for Rally...when it released Ford claimed it was stiffer in stock form than a Rally-prepped CT20 (Escort) chassis. So while it may be aging, its no slouch. Although I'd much rather have the C1 chassis, its supposed to be more of an improvement over the C170 than it was over the CT20.

Sweet thanks for all the replies, to answer, it was the 6 speed manual. I'm not sure if that's quicker than the DSG or not. The DSG probably eliminates driver error though, so who knows. I think the SVTF vs. the VR6 GTI MKIV is actually a drivers race, they were slower than the 1.8T by a smidgen, so good job Kyle!

The MK III VR6 was 180hp and heavy, but there was no 1.8t in the MK III. When the 1.8t was first put in the MK IV it was only 150hp and the VR6 was still 180hp. Then for one model year, I believe 02 or 03, the 1.8t was upped to 180hp while the VR6 stayed at 180hp. So for that year model up the 1.8t was faster than that year model down VR6, due to the VR6 model being heavier. After that the VR6 was upped to 200hp.

I beat one at a track. Dont remember the times but I beat him mainly due to great shifts on my part. Nobody really believes me though... sniff, sniff.

I'm Not an svt but I've beat more of these things than i can count, street track whatever. If the things were chipped i'm sure it'd be a different story, but stock they are just lacking something... The only modded one i raced kept pretty close he was like a car back till 4th when i let off. The DSG ones are definately faster than the manual ones though.

I got a good taste of what VW's lay down at Waterfest in NJ - one of the largest (if not THE largest) VW gatherings/shows/drag events of the year.

Even modded GTI's were NOT that impressive. I spent a good hour at the strip just watching driver after driver, high 14's were the name of the game. We're talking decently modded turbocharged cars here. I saw very few Vdubs make their way into the 13's - period, and it was usually an R32.

So all in all, I can see you taking a new GTI if you have a good race.

Update to this one. Ran the dude again now that I have my ORP and Borla combo, and the extra hp definitely helped, because this time the SVT came out ahead. Yes, just barely, but I killed a MKV GTI!
